Disney's Doug: Roger Klotz, The Doug Archetype, and The Slice of Life Fantasy

Now that we're in the Disney One Saturday Morning era, a lot more of the cartoons we discuss are going to be "my childhood," and Doug is one of them, though not in the way it was for most kids my age.

I had a very on and off sort of relationship with Doug. Sometimes I loved it. Sometimes I hated it. As I watched more Doug as an adult, both Nick and Disney, I quickly figured out why.

1:50 AM · Dec 26, 2020 "honestly this sorta explains the youthful flip flopping i had regarding doug. i would like it some times and i would hate it others. and most times i liked it it was disney doug."

Though a lot of Doug fans would disagree with me, I really had a strong preference to the new Doug. I certainly agree that Nickelodeon's Doug had a lot more depth to its characters and a more down to earth feel, but that ultimately made the show really boring, even with all the Nonbinary Vice Principal Bone jokes I made watching the show.

[Image ID: Vice Principal Bone from Doug hugging a skateboard and standing in front of a nonbinary flag with two nonbinary symbols on it. They have a white mug that says "World's Best Nonbinary Vice Principal." The word nonbinary is spelled with nonbinary flag colors. Everyone else is spelled in black colors. /End ID]

10:43 AM · Dec 26, 2020 "hello nonbinary icon"

I think my opinions on this are at their strongest and most controversial whenever Roger Klotz shows up. In the original series, Roger is a poor kid who has some real self esteem issues. He usually bullies people because he isn't all that good at making friends. It's some relatable stuff, and I think people get a lot out of him being a bad guy but having a reason to.

In the Disney series though, he's suddenly rich and a cartoonish villain.

8:55 PM · Dec 25, 2020 "the surrealism of disney's doug is surprisingly fun!!!! i love whatever roger is doing.... he's so cartoonish"
9:04 PM · Dec 25, 2020
"
i would watch an entire show about rich roger...."
9:10 PM · Dec 25, 2020
"
like he MAKES this show.... i dont care as much about doug but whatever shit roger is going through is GREAT. i'd rather see him as sort of this maniacal nut doing his own thing than it antagonist"
10:54 PM · Dec 25, 2020
"yah i'm starting to get it. doug isn't actually funny. roger is."
2:22 AM · Dec 26, 2020
"
a lot of the appeal of disney doug is how kinda cazy it went. nick kept the crazy in imagine spots most of the time. it felt surreal like something was off but barely, but the really weird stuff was limited to imagine spots. disney doug said fuck it. let's make roger cartoonish"
2:23 AM · Dec 26, 2020 "and this is something i see a lot. like over the top cartoony characters, and with roger it's interesting because a lot of people respect roger's character in the nick show. like. i don't. but. he has depth to him... personally i prefer him cartoonish rich and fucked up"

I think a lot of bullies (and villains in general) get this treatment where they're treated as multifaceted, for a ton of reasons, but you really don't see a lot of school bully characters being cartoonishly evil in a way that's still charming and fun. I do understand people feeling like Roger's character was stepped on for this, but I think it's important to remember: There Is No Ideal Roger Klotz.

Disney's Doug was also a bit more mature than Nickelodeon's Doug. I think it had an advantage with Doug being a year older, and going through puberty, but there's also the inclusion of Cleotapra Dirtbike Funnie (yes this is her real name) that causes Doug's dad to go through a multi episode mini-arc trying to give Doug the talk using various metaphors that ends with Doug giving his father the talk during the Christmas episode.

10:37 PM · Dec 25, 2020 "me when i start this disney thon: oh wow funny morshu isekai man
me now: SEX????????"

12:38 AM · Dec 26, 2020
"
it's a surprisingly mature show like idk if nick doug tackled things like sex and eds...."

There's also an episode where Patti gets an eating disorder, which I think it's good to educate preteen kids about. Body positivity in general has kind of a long way to go in the year of our lord 2022, but for the 1990s, it's still a good episode.

Anyway, remember what I said about Doug's dad's mini arc?

9:32 PM · Dec 25, 2020 "what do you mean disney's doug has lore"

The entire Disney run has this overarching story about a monster living in the town's lake. The whole thing is resolved in Doug's First Movie, but this is set up from the beginning of the second season "Doug's Secret of Success." It's kind of an amazing episode. There's three different stories going on: One with Doug trying to join the capitalist club at his school, one with Skeeter and Mr. Dink trying to catch this monster, and one with Vice Principal Bone and Roger playing cat and mouse.

8:25 PM · Dec 25, 2020 "this seems suspiciously like a capitalist cult and not just a funny 8th grader club"
8:28 PM · Dec 25, 2020
"
DOES BLUFF NOT BRUSH HIS TEETH????"
8:34 PM · Dec 25, 2020
"
this feels more authentic than nick doug. the a b and c plots all together. roger and vice principal bone detention adventures. skeeter and mr dink hunting monsters. doug and capitalism"
8:37 PM · Dec 25, 2020
"
BLUFF ACTUALLY DOESN'T BRUSH HIS TEEEEEETH"

Another ep I liked was "The Big Switch," which doesn't really have the Doug themed title a lot of the Nick episodes have... Disney's a bit off and on with that, but I'm not a diehard Doug-ist so I don't care. It's really fun. I enjoy role swap episodes, so this one was fun!

1:14 AM · Dec 26, 2020 "doug and patti are swapping.... the main ship skeeter and beebe... who also are a ship and roger and chalky........... never thought roger would rep the lgbt community but good for him"
1:24 AM · Dec 26, 2020 "i love how everyone had real problems.
doug had to deal with patti's rigorous homeschool
patti had to deal with being a protagonist
skeeter was judged for his ignorance of class
beebe couldn't take care of a baby
roger had to do physical labor
and chalky just got lost..."

While Nickelodeon Doug had more in depth characters, Disney Doug had greater humor, overarching story, relatability for an aging audience, and fantastical elements.

10:01 PM · Dec 25, 2020 "i hate to admit how entertained i am but disney's doug is actually pretty good"
10:42 AM · Dec 26, 2020
"
i am really enjoying how much the writers on doug decided to do whatever they wanted. like. why is this version of doug so much funnier than nick doug????"

It's... still Doug though. Most of the show's humor came from Roger. Disney does have a weak point in its characters, and that usually means that if they're not funny, they kind of suck.

9:33 AM · Dec 26, 2020 "doug's father was a hippie and doug thinks it's uncool"

Something you may notice is that the cartoons are getting more simple. It wasn't as big a thing with Jungle Cubs, but Madeline had a very simple style to it and so does Doug. I think this is a really good mark of the One Saturday Morning era. We're gonna get less 90's furries and more characters who are shapes!

11:22 PM · Dec 25, 2020 "the really nice thing about this whole era of shows (the abc one saturday morning era) is that all the characters look really simplistic and cartoony and just generally appealing to the eyes. like look at this cruella. so angular and fun!"

11:31 PM · Dec 25, 2020 "i think despite my feeling about doug jim jinkins may be the person to thank. doug is sort of a proto the same way ren and stimpy is and it's a proto that worked well for disney"

I'm not sure if Doug pioneered this or what, but I would like to speculate a bit. Because Doug did pioneer quite a bit.

What we do know is that Jim Jinkins, creator of Doug went on to create three more shows for Disney Channel: PB&J Otter, Stanley, and Jojo's Circus. All of these shows were mid.

We also know that many characters are seen as various iterations of Doug. A tweet by Ian Jones-Quartey from 2018 shows various iterations of Doug. On the Disney side, we have Funny Girl Doug (Pepper Ann Pearson), Space Doug (Lloyd Nebulon), Four Dougs (Tino Tonitini, Lor McQuarrie, Carver Descartes, and Tish Katsufrakis), School Doug (Vince LaSalle, Spinelli, Mikey Blumberg, TJ Detweiler, Gus Griswald, and Gretchen Grundler), Black Girl Doug (Penny Proud), and Dog Doug (Scott Leadready II). Do I agree with all of these? Probably not. I would argue Penny, Scott, and the Recess kids are too cool to actually be Dougs, but I'll get back to that. Let's talk about the first archetype this blog will go over: The Doug.

11:07 PM · Jan 8, 2021 doug archetype
character must:
-be a young person in school
-show interest in social life/popularity
-err to the side of uncoolness or be painfully average (cannot actually be popular)
additional qualities
-overactive imagination
-best subject is art
-not great at school

Pepper Ann Pearson? Definitely a Doug. Lloyd Nebulon? Yeah! Carver Descartes? Totally! Scott Leadready II? Actually I think Leonard Helperman might be your more typical Doug character.

1:48 AM · Dec 26, 2020 "part of me is wondering if doug paved the way for the "disney teen" sort of deal but..... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm"

However, even if a character isn't necessarily a Doug, Doug still looks like it played a part in the "fantastical slice of life" series.

I bring this up because I've been watching Proud Family and Amphibia lately. (I actually finished Amphibia and I may bring its rating back down to B; the second half of season 3 was a bit of a flop.) The Proud Family in particular is a lot more fantastical than I remember it being as a kid. Penny can talk to animals, the girls have their own internationally acclaimed girl group, Bebe and Cece become teenagers.

Amphibia on the other hand is much more of an adventure show, but pulls particularly in its style from Pepper Ann, which I quietly took note of until I saw her cameo in "All In."

While the original Doug series had these wild imagine spots, Disney's Doug was a little more off the walls and also monsters were real in it. It's enough to make me wonder... Were these more fantastical slice of life shows inspired by Doug?

A lot of Disney's original live action stuff started in the 2000s, with Even Stevens and Lizzie McGuire. I don't know a ton about Even Stevens, but from what I do know, it was a pretty chill series with a Truman Show-esque finale movie. Lizzie McGuire had a lot of similarities to Doug and Pepper Ann with the imagine spot alter ego (this time being a cartoon), but also had some more fantastical stuff like "Those Freaky McGuires" or Hilary Duff having a pop sensation doppelganger in "The Lizzie McGuire Movie." (Keep in mind my knowledge of live action Disney isn't super big.) Eventually, we got shows like That's So Raven and Phil of the Future, and a ton of ads about how the Disney Channel live action stars are "Just like you" save some fantastical element of their lives.

That's actually kind of smart though. Giving your characters some strange fantastical things to go through for a lot of younger fans looking for something silly and new while also staying grounded for your older fans looking for someone to relate to. This certainly didn't start with Doug, especially since gimmicky sitcoms have been around since the 1960s with stuff like Mr. Ed, Addams Family, and Flintstones. But now it feels like there's a new direction for Disney and at least one new trend. Don't worry! The One Saturday Morning Era will have more!

Madeline: A Simple Cartoon That Should Have Stayed That Way

I'm gonna be honest: I don't really know if Madeline counts as a Disney show. I even skipped it when I was going through the Disney watch, along with a certain adult comedy created by DTVA. Madeline was originally aired on ABC and Disney and was made by DIC, but later seasons greatly involved Disney, especially season 3, which aired on Disney Channel.

So for that, I mostly watched the second and third season, avoiding the first altogether.

Much like Gargoyles and Jungle Cubs, I got a lot of ironic enjoyment out of this one, particularly season 2.

Season 2 of Madeline is really what anyone would expect when they hear Madeline. A charming cartoon of mischievous but well natured little girls, with the most mischievous well natured littlest one being Madeline. It was pretty similar to the 90s specials I was raised on in Kindergarten, and there's not really a lot I can discuss about the show, so I'm mostly gonna talk about episodes I remember.

"Madeline's Detective School" was probably my favorite episode of the bunch. I tweeted a lot about it. The basic synopsis is that Madeline is good at solving mysteries so she starts a detective school. When Miss Clavel gets in legal trouble for having stolen items, they have to figure out the culprit.

Also the kids at detective school are famous literary detectives as children.

"THEY GOT PAID IN PLAY MONEY"

Ultimately, however, I watched more of season 3, as it was on Disney Channel. The differences between season 2 and 3 are pretty striking, though not as much as Jungle Cubs. The theme song is slightly different, the art is better, and the narrator is different, and those are the main overt differences.

9:39 AM · May 9, 2021 "ah shit madeline has compositon now?"
10:26 AM · May 9, 2021
"
the disney season of madeline is a flop because in the opening, when madeline rides the train into the tunnel, the girls all say "bonjour" while in previous seasons, they said "au revoir" which is much more sinister."

1:07 PM · May 10, 2021
"season 3 of madeline is just so vaguely uncomfortable"
1:59 PM · May 10, 2021
"why does something have to happen in every episode of madeline? is it not enough to have ms clavel threatened with jail time?"

It also just kind of sucks? I don't why but there's a considerably lack of charm in the third season. Maybe it's because they're trying to do so much when they don't have to. Madeline can be simple and I think it's at its best when simple but smart, but that's kind of my philosophy when it comes to my interests.

Also season 3 is a little bit more fantastical. Here is a giant bug in a dress.

[Image ID: A screencap of a giant purple bug in an orange dress with a yellow scarf /End ID]

Season 3 also has a marked increase of "Madeline travels somewhere" episodes. She goes to America, the North Pole, Versailles, and usually learns some stuff... In America, she learns about jazz music and how radio dramas are made, including one by someone called the Spider Lady.

9:45 AM · May 9, 2021 "madeline doesn't know about jazz music
9:47 AM · May 9, 2021 "
madeline's pen pal listens to horror radio dramas... good....."
10:01 AM · May 9, 2021
"the spider lady got cancelled"

At the North Pole, she saves Christmas.

1:32 PM · May 10, 2021 "santa was completely fucked"

And in Versaille, Pepito is on some shit. Again.

Pepito is probably one of the funniest characters in Madeline. He's a troublesome young boy and whenever I see him, I always smile because he's always doing something goofy.

Another character I liked was Miss Clavel, which may be because I'm gay as hell and love the most milquetoast characters imaginable.

9:59 AM · May 9, 2021 "ms. clavel is my favorite i think....."
10:49 AM · May 9, 2021
"Anyway I know Ms. Clavel is a woman of god but I think she’s neat"
1:36 PM · May 10, 2021
"
can i put ms clavel in the dream blunt rotation"

Worth pointing out there is also some racism in Madeline, particularly some Anti-Romani slurs. This is an old French series after all. Madeline does treat people with kindness regardless of background, but the show does still have slurs in it, some said by Madeline.

"Madeline and the New Girl" sort of plays on the opposite of the typical Madeline goes somewhere and learns about culture. In this episode, a girl named Lakshmi visits the boarding school from India. The other girls notice Lakshmi's interest in astronomy and overhear Miss Clavel talking on the phone about Lakshmi's status as a foreign national and come to the conclusion that Lakshmi is from outer space. By the end though, they realize she's just a girl who likes space, and they learn to embrace Indian culture.

It's one of the better season 3 episodes, but I don't know how well it aged.

2:00 PM · May 10, 2021 "lakshmi has dog related trauma be nice to her"
2:16 PM · May 10, 2021 "stylin"
[Image ID: A screencap of Madeline posing while wearing Indian attire: An orange himmed shirt and pants, along with a darker orange scarf. /End ID]

Another episode, "Madeline on Stage" had all the girls obsessed with theater and being in a play. Miss Clavel was sick of it so she hired a theater teacher, hoping they'd all get tired of it. They don't.

3:21 PM · May 10, 2021 "ms clavel: i will bring in a horrible acting teacher and they will stop being theater kids
the girls, still theater kids:"

[Image ID: A screencap of Madeline answering a croissant like a phone. The girl next to her is also talking. /End ID]

Madeline also gets upset she didn't get the best parts in the play and we see all these imagine spots of roles she could have gotten...

3:24 PM · May 10, 2021 "how did madeline leak my fursona?"
[Image ID: A screencap of Madeline dressed as a white bird. /End ID]

Season 2 of Madeline was a lot of fun, and the 3rd season, while a lot cleaner and more active, just didn't do it for me. I think Madeline should just be kept simple.

Uh. Hi. I said I was gonna cover Madeline next but I've been having some problems with images appearing and disappearing depending on the day. So I wanted to do something with fewer images.

You'll notice some of the dates on these (and Doug, when we get to that one), are Christmas day. What a way to spend Christmas huh? I think  decided to stay in while family went out due to COVID-19 and travel concerns. Actually it wasn't all that bad. It's a lot easier to get ironic enjoyment out of some of the lousier One Saturday Morning cartoons.

This one is weird. I don't particularly like to act like something is underrated and no one has heard of it, but this is the first show I'd only heard of through the Disney watch. Which is weird because this was a show I probably would have grown up with. I watched a lot of Disney in the day and the late 90s were around the time I watched Playhouse Disney, when this aired, but I don't have a single memory of this show. I didn't really know what to expect.

it has a lot of the innocence of little mermaid, but more contemporary qualities as well like quack pack or goof troop"

Yeah it's more hip 90s and also a kid AU.

1:13 PM · Dec 24, 2020 "everyone looks and sounds different except for kaa"

But... We did this with Jungle Book before? Maybe Baloo was just that popular at the time?

I'm gonna be honest, I hated the Jungle Book movie, but I had a lot of fun with this show. It's generic and tries to be hip, but for some shows it works well.

Baloo is the same sort of character he is in the movie, a lazy fun loving kid. He's also the main protagonist of the show. Bagheera is the local goodboy and second in command. I remember the least about him. Louie is also the same, a prince and a partyboy, who loves human things. Hathi is very militarily minded, but he also has crazy anxiety. Kaa is a bit of a peanut allergy character, discussing various ailments of his at length, and probably the most consistent comic relief (or at least, he's the character I personally got the most laughs from).

Shere Khan is... well...

5:58 PM · Dec 25, 2020 "shere khan acts like that gay prep girl in life in the dreamhouse"
6:20 PM · Dec 25, 2020 "i really like shere khan's character but it's one i've seen before. like this show you could just watch a compilation of shere khan sassy moments i think"

There was also Winnifred, who I guess was the girl, though she only showed up in a few episodes and was a love interest for Hathi. Mahra too, though she was a lot more of a villain... Maybe I never watched it because it was a bit of a boy's show.

The show is about the characters all hanging out and being friends, even though a lot of them hate one another in the movie.

3:17 PM · Dec 24, 2020 "jungle cubs are all friends despite their political leanings."

It's pretty generic, but I think that works out for the show. The episodes can go back and forth between typical cartoon fare, something Kipling actually wrote, and whatever "The Coming of the Wolves" was.

6:52 PM · Dec 25, 2020 "what's going on?????? this feels so much more serious???? like. implied adultery?"

7:10 PM · Dec 25, 2020
"THE PREGNANCY EPISODE OF JUNGLE CUBS?"

It's got a very back and forth nature of escaping an abusive leader and uh... Kaa getting stuck in a wall. Nothing ever comes off as bad or too mature for young children, but the whiplash is definitely something.

I think the other episode I wanna talk about from the first season is "Mondo Mungo," which is just the My Gym Partner's a Monkey episode "Mongoosed" done over a decade earlier. And also with Kaa instead of Slips.

5:34 PM · Dec 25, 2020 "THIS IS JUST THAT ONE EPISODE OF MY GYM PARTNER'S A MONKEY..... EXCEPT INSTEAD OF SLIPS IT'S KAA."

I get a huge kick out of specific episodes that overlap like that. I feel almost certain that this was just two different writing crews finding out this same snake fact and making a cartoon out of it.

Honestly, Kaa seemed like the forefront of the show when I watched it, but that may just be the episodes that were available to me. It's a bit of a harder show to find.

There's also a lot of songs. They're not all that good.

1:05 PM · Dec 24, 2020 "baloo sing"

7:55 PM · Dec 25, 2020 "overall i prefer season 1 due to ironic enjoyment, but i think cree summer as louie was an improvement!!! sorry jason marsden...."

The show lost a lot of the hip edge I noticed in the first season, which was really sad. Granted, I only watched one episode, "The Ape Who Would Be King," which was about Louie and Shere Khan fighting to be king of the jungle, and all the other animals choosing factions.

7:45 PM · Dec 25, 2020 "KAA TRIED TO ASSASSINATE SHERE KHAN????"

I didn't get as much out of it as season 1 episodes, probably due to it being a lot flatter, but oh well, that was the end of Jungle Cubs for me. Onto Doug.

Ducks Part... Four?!?!??!?! (Legend of the Three Caballeros and Mighty Ducks)

12:57 PM · Dec 22, 2020 "i like it when tim curry calls them duckies"

I discussed characterizations of Donald Duck and all his friends. I rambled about how various characterizations are valid and how some don't work in every animated duck focused series. I talked about some of my favorite Duck comic and series characterizations. I left out House of Mouse and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse/Mixed Up Adventures/Funhouse, as those will be their own post. Or two.

Surely I covered all my bases.

No I didn't. I forgot Legend of the Three Caballeros.

This Ducks part 4 post was going to be a joke where I just talked about Mighty Ducks, as no one brought it up in the survey, but I did keep the definition of Duck media vague enough for it to be included. But I forgot about LOT3C, so I guess I gotta go over that first.

I think character wise, everyone agrees this is a pretty standard Donald Duck. Jose and Panchito are also pretty good. I noticed in the introduction that they kept some of the manipulative laziness Jose had from the comics. As for Panchito, he's in a lot more comics than I was expecting, but a huge majority are either US comics from the 1940s going off the popularity of the Three Caballeros release (and the ones I remember reading are kind of of their time) or Dutch comics that if they got a translation, it was into Finnish. This series characterized him as a bit of a dim witted oddball, and I feel like out of the main three, he might be the weakest.

There's also Donald's love life, which is a nightmare to sit through, but it gives us April, May, and June, who are a hoot and a half. Sheldrake and Feldgoose are also fun, but very much in that "meme character" sort of way. Also Xandra is there.

Really what interests me is how insane duck fans went over this show. Legend of the Three Caballeros was quietly released on DisneyLife in the Phillipines sometime in summer 2018. Someone brought it up on 4chan. 4chan went crazy. Twitter went crazy. Tumblr went crazy. If I recall correctly this was a worldwide thing, with a French publication telling kids there's a new Three Caballeros cartoon, but it's only in the Phillipines, which I spent the last hour looking for and couldn't find. Any French fans remember what I'm talking about LMK.

I tend not to be in fandoms when big events like that are happening, so that was a bit exciting for me, and the show was fine, so net good.

Okay let's talk about Mighty Ducks.

this show feels so much like a religious allegory...."

I’m liking mighty ducks. Yes it’s probably because it’s a show tailor made for me but it’s nice. Evil Tim curry dragon"
Mighty Ducks has a lot of things I look for in a show. Anthropomorphic ducks, Christianity metaphors I could clown on, science fiction slants, fourth wall jokes, hockey. Naturally, I was really expecting to like this show. But.... ehhhhh...

10:18 AM · Dec 22, 2020 "i really hate tanya's voice.... like who directed april winchell to sound as awful as possible?"

"this cast is actually pretty amazing imho but everyone sounds awful and idgi...."

I’m thinking about mighty ducks again like it has all the things I love (cartoon birds, scifi, an amazing cast I love, fourth wall jokes, hockey), so I should love it, but it kinda falls flat in its characters and direction"

Much like Rescue Rangers, it was not super fun to listen to, though this time it was primarily due to voice direction rather than sound effects.

The ducks themselves fell pretty flat too. It felt like this series was ultimately trying to do something similar to Gargoyles, but with a sillier tone, but it failed to realize that the characters in Gargoyles were interesting.

10:02 AM · Dec 22, 2020 "chameleon is a funny concept all he does is make references"

"
i love the jim belushi furry capitalist"

All the best moments are given to the Saurians (which I just realized... comes from the Greek word for lizard) and Stoner King Jim Belushi. Wraith and Chameleon in particular are amazing, but I feel like people would love Dragaunus and Siege just as much, if just for the voice actors (Tim Curry and Clancy Brown).

10:00 AM · Dec 22, 2020 "nosedive sounds like he's about to swear all the time"
I think Nosedive is probably the best of the Duck characters because he gets the most screentime to be good. He's kind of like the Bumblebee of the bunch. The kid appeal character who is basically just a hip teen trying to prove himself.

I don't have much to say about Mighty Ducks. I wanted to love it but overall was pretty eh on it.

With this, we're out of the Disney Afternoon and we can start with the One Saturday Morning block. This was where a lot more of my childhood was, so I might have some better backstory surrounding some of these shows.

Though we might have a bit of a break in between. We'll see...

I'll leave you with this.
