Fancy Nancy: You Claim You Want More Evil Women Characters But Can't Even Handle Nancy Clancy

I know I keep forgetting to post here, and I'm also gonna need to give the blog a bit of an overhaul, as I was image hosting on discord. I'll need to move things to imgur or perhaps here! However, I decided from now on, I'm gonna start posting the episodes in any order. Next up was Muppet Babies, but I wanted to combine that one with Big City Greens, which I still need to finish. Not to mention, I wanna finish Penn Zero too, for that double feature. Anyway I know I say this every month but I do hope I get back on this.

Yeah the show was boring, but I also did not like Fancy Nancy the character and found her a detriment to the show. This is wild because Nancy Clancy is only seven years old.

I'm not usually one to hate child characters, and even though I've said time and time again that Gravity Falls is overrated, I still think Mabel's a perfectly fine character, for example. When it comes to kid characters I tend to turn the other cheek because they're young.

In addition, there are a lot of characters like Nancy I thoroughly enjoy. Rich bitch characters that are more complex have become a bit more popular lately, and I can't help but appreciate them because characters with personalities are always a delight to me. In addition, fancy pompous jerk characters are kind of a favorite character trope for me (I finished Revolutionary Girl Utena recently and my favorite character by far is Nanami.) So what's the deal with Nancy? 

Honestly she's kind of a bad friend.

A lot of episodes I watched were about Nancy and Bree having a disagreement because Nancy was unable to budge on things, and it felt really unfair to Bree. In a more specific example, there's "JoJo Does The Dirty Work," in which Nancy gets her toddler sister to tell her friends, including Bree, that she didn't want to be dance partners with them anymore.

Granted, that was one of the cartoonishly evil things she did, and I have a bit of respect for that, but she's also kind of terrible to the rest of her family, which are amazing to watch in comparison.

Granted, some of them are pretty funny, like Nancy getting all the neighborhood kids to go on strike and refuse to give their parents hugs and kisses, but the way she treats her mother and JoJo, who are a lot less feminine is insane to watch. JoJo especially, she just wants to be a pirate.

You gotta appreciate the patience of Mrs. Clancy though, all things considered.

Though to be fair, though, this show does take place in Canada. (EDIT 12/05/2023: Apparently that isn't right lmfao apparently it takes place in Ohio. I have no idea why I put Canada in my notes. Maybe something overtly Canadian like a Superstore or the machine?)

I guess Nancy's kind of living her dream in that regard. French culture is pretty normal here, even if you're outside Quebec. I've gone to events where they straight up only speak French in Manitoba. I could question it, but honestly, she's probably in heaven right now.

Or not?

Anyway the episode "Escar-No!" is about the Clancy family winning a contest in which a fancy French chef comes to make them a fancy French dinner. Nancy is so excited at this prospect until she realizes they're eating snails and has to deal with the cognitive dissonance and amount that she wants to throw up and would rather eat something else. 

The episode is kind of peak Nancy being unbearable to me, which is wild, because the other episode it was paired with, "Trois Cheers for Mrs. Devine" is objectively the best episode of the show. It made me cry.

A bit of background, Mrs. Devine is a old woman who is a neighbor of Nancy and her family. Nancy absolutely idolizes her because Mrs. Devine is also very fancy and unapologetically herself. 

The episode is about Mrs. Devine being sad and Nancy trying to do everything she can to make Mrs. Devine less sad so she can play, despite Mrs. Devine insisting that today is just a very sad day. It turns out that it's the anniversary of her husband's death and she really misses him. She sings a whole song about it and man it's so good.

Honestly, I'd watch a whole show about Mrs. Devine. I'd watch a show about JoJo. I'd watch a show about the mom or Bree or Lionel who I totally forgot to mention until this point. I'd even watch some of the insane ass background characters this show has.

But the show isn't about any of them. It's about Nancy, and I really wish it wasn't. I hate to say this about a kid character, but the show would be a lot more fun without her.
